The artwork collection, including five paintings produced collaboratively and two created by Dorothy Alderson, will go up for sale as separate lots at Thomas Watson Auctioneers and Valuers in Darlington on Saturday, October 13.
The sisters have a strong following in the North East, with many of their paintings inspired by the Northallerton landscape, where the two grew up. Among the pictures are farmyard scenes and paintings of animals and it is expected that the lots will sell for between £200 and £1,000 each.
The twins, who were born at the turn of the 20th century, produced their pieces together, with one sister concentrating on the left-hand side of the painting and the other on the right. The two would then meet in the middle, with their work merging seamlessly as one portrait.
David Elstob, business development manager at Thomas Watson, said: “The Alderson sisters’ work always attracts a lot of interest and we expect that a large number of people will turn out to bid for the items on offer at this forthcoming auction.
“It’s unusual to have a collection of this many items coming up for sale at the same auction, and each of the lots really are stunning in their own right. We’re thrilled to be able to offer them for sale at Thomas Watson, especially as this is the first of our new quarterly Saturday auctions.”
The Alderson sisters produced pieces for more than seven decades, with many of their paintings commissioned by local farmers and landowners. The seven lots will go under the hammer along with items including jewellery and furniture.
The quarterly Saturday auction, on October 13, has been newly introduced, along with an online auction facility that will allow web users to bid for items on sale live in the auction house.
The Saturday auctions will see fine art and antiques come under the hammer, with Thomas Watsons’ usual fortnightly auctions continuing to take place every other Tuesday.
